Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Promotes Wound Healing
Our Advanced Wound Center offers Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) which "nourishes" the patient''s wound with pure oxygen to safely promote healing. Patients breathe 100% oxygen in a sealed chamber. The increased oxygen improves the ability of white blood cells to fight infection and creates the optimal environment for the body''s natural healing processes to repair damaged tissue. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy also stimulates the growth of new blood vessels that also promote wound healing.
What Type of Wounds Do You Treat?
Our two Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers will primarily be used to treat non-healing wounds, radiation therapy injuries following treatment for cancer and skin grafts, flaps or burns.
What to Expect
Your procedure will last anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. Depending on your specific needs you will need to come every day Monday-Friday for several weeks. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a book or an activity that you can do in the chamber.
You will lie down on a padded table, which slides into a tube. This is called a single-person chamber. A technician will gradually pressurize the chamber with 100% oxygen which is five times higher than the normal air we breathe. For your comfort, the chamber offers an intercom for communication, low interior and exterior noise levels, and redundant safety systems.
While in the chamber, you will be instructed to:
Immediately After Your Procedure
- Relax and breathe normally.
- If your ears pop or you have discomfort, tell the technician who may be able to lower the pressure.
- Swallow or blow with your nose pinched to relieve discomfort.
- After getting to the right pressure, place a clear plastic hood or mask over your head. This will deliver oxygen to you.
Over a period of several minutes, the technician will slowly depressurize the chamber. You will likely have some ear popping and feel light-headed and tired. However, you should be able to go back to your daily activities.
Will It Hurt?
You will not have any pain. Your ears may feel full.
After You Are Finished With Each Treatment
In most cases, there is no special care after each HBOT treatment although your wound may need special care for other reasons.
Be sure to follow your doctor''s instructions.
