|Moms, Provide Your Child with a Healthy Start - 8/20/2012|
Children deserve the best, healthiest start in life say the health providers at New Castle Pediatrics. And, according to the local pediatricians as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics, part of that healthy start begins with exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued breastfeeding for at least the first year of a child's life.
"Studies continue to show any amount of breastfeeding is beneficial," says Pediatrician Lisa Richmond, MD. "Breastfeeding provides greater protection from illness, reduction in ear infections and may protect babies from developing allergies. More recent studies are showing a strong link between breastfeeding and a lower incidence of obesity as a teen or adult as well as a connection between breastfeeding and intelligence."
Although most American women plan on breastfeeding their newborns, less than one-third of those who expected to exclusively breastfeed for three months or more met that goal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes of the 75% of mothers starting out breastfeeding, only 13% still are exclusively breastfeeding their infants at the end of six months.
Breastfeeding is the gift of life and the best possible food for your baby as it has all the right nutrients in just the right amounts. It actually changes to meet the needs of a growing baby.
And, best of all, it's free.
National Breastfeeding Awareness Month is marked in the U.S. throughout the month of August and is celebrated in more than 170 countries worldwide.
